Planting & Care

1. Planting Instructions: Choose an area with full shade to partial shade for your Holly Fern – any space that doesn’t receive much sunlight throughout the day (shelter from afternoon sun specifically). Well-drained, evenly moist soil is also important for your Fern to thrive. However, it thrives in most soil types, especially with mulching.

To plant your Holly Fern, dig a hole that’s deep enough to cover the plant’s root ball – it should also be about two times the root ball’s width. After placing your plant, tamp down the soil while backfilling to avoid air pocket. Then, water your plant to settle the soil that surrounds the roots.

2. Watering: Water your Holly Fern deeply and regularly during the first full growing season for best results. To test when and how much to water your plant, check the top 2 to 3 inches of its surrounding soil – if it’s dry, it’s time to water. We recommend watering about once or twice weekly for best results.

3. Fertilizer: Feed with well-balanced fertilizer periodically during the growing season.

4. Pruning: Remove any older, faded fronds after new growth begins during spring.
